Tom Lambke, proud dad of Bryan, truly understands a quote written long ago from the book, The Little Prince: "It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; what is essential is invisible to the eye. ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery."
This wonderful dad not only has the uncanny ability to look beyond his son's disability, but he also has the ability of to share with us the celebration of what his son's gift of having Down syndrome has taught him. Tom does indeed, listen with his heart. It evident to me that Tom loves his son with a passion and a power that I only wish every child could know.
It is with his heart that he is truly able to see his son as the amazing person his as one who has come to teach us humor, love, patience but most of all unconditional love.
Tom is only able to see these things because his heart is pure. He reminds us that Down syndrome is not something to be mourned but rather celebrated. It is evident to me where Tom's heart is when he reflects what being in Ireland with Bryan and other Special Olympians meant to him as they returned to the real world.
I felt like we actually had just left what the real world should really be; a place where there is not humiliation, mockery, or violence, only bravery, approval, and acceptance; a world with out hate, only love; a world without fear, only incredible goals. We had spend fifteen days in a world where lying and cheating did not exist. Fifteen days that included two nights involving 75,000-plus people experiencing pure joy with absolutely no inhibitions. It was a world that should be an example to the rest of the globe. We all have a lot to learn from Special Olympian athletes and their attitude to life. They do not hide their feelings and are not afraid to love. I only wish that the rest of the world could have "Shared the Feeling" with us" Thank you Tom for sharing your insight with us.
